自2011年以来，大规模的在线课程 (MOOC) 开始出现，《纽约时报》称2012年为“MOOC年”。从那时起，在线自由课程的规模呈指数级增长。在过去七年左右的时间里，超过800所大学创造了大约10,000个MOOC。
